No more short-term health plans???
On July 7, 2023, a number of Federal Departments released a proposal to modify the definition of short-term, limited-duration insurance (STLDI) plans. The biggest change would be to limit the maximum duration allowed. During the previous administration, STLDI plans duration limits were increased to 36 months, fixing the main complaint with short-term plans at the time - 'they only last 6 months, then everything resets.'
Short-term plans allowed millions of American's to find a solution outside the Affordable Care Act coverage that forces people to pay for services they don't need. But this feature has been identified as a bug by the Biden administration calling the plans "junk insurance" as they do not cover services for pre-existing conditions.
The key in all this is understanding the benefits and limitations of your health insurance and healthcare options. There is no 'one size fits all' solution. For some a short-term plan is the answer to a limited need, often called a "hit by a bus plan." But these plans should be explained and understood before you enroll.
